ABSTRACT

Background/Objectives: Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS) is a rare hereditary cancer predisposition syndrome characterized by high lifetime risks for multiple primary malignancies. Although most individuals with LFS inherit a pathogenic TP53 variant from a parent, approximately 20% have de novo variants with no suggestive family cancer history. This may result in an LFS experience distinct from individuals with affected relatives. This multi-case study report examines the unique psychosocial experiences of three young adults with de novo TP53 variants. Method(s): The National Cancer Institute's LFS study (NCT01443468) recruited adolescents and young adults (AYAs;aged 15-39 years) with LFS for qualitative interviews. Three participants had a de novo TP53 variant and a personal cancer history. An interprofessional team analyzed interview data using extended case study and narrative methods. Result(s): De novo participants lacked familiarity with LFS to situate a cancer diagnosis, interpret genetic test results, or adjust to chronic cancer risk. Communicating with and receiving support from family was challenged by their lack of common experience. De novo participants experienced socioemotional isolation, which was amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic. To cope, they sought support in online rare disease communities or through mental health providers. Conclusion(s): Individuals with de novo variants may lack familial guides and familiar providers to address disease management and uncertainty. Specialty health and mental health providers may support de novo patients across hereditary cancer syndromes by validating their uncertainties and connecting them with diseasespecific patient advocacy groups that support adjustment to chronic cancer risk.

ABSTRACT

During the current crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wearable IoT (WIoT) health devices have become essential resources for remote monitoring of the main physiological signs affected by this disease. As well as sensors, microprocessor, and wireless communication elements are widely studied, the power supply unit has the same importance for the WIoT technology, since the autonomy of the system between recharges is of great importance. This letter presents the design of the power supply system of a WIoT device capable of monitoring oxygen saturation and body temperature, sending the collected data to an IoT platform. The supply system is based on a three-stage block consisting of a rechargeable battery, battery charge controller, and dc voltage converter. The power supply system is designed and implemented as a prototype in order to test performance and efficiency. The results show that the designed block provides a stable supply voltage avoiding energy losses, which makes it an efficient and rapidly developing system.

ABSTRACT

As one of the first doctors issued a protective warning to the public, Dr. Li Wenliang was known as "whistleblower" of COVID-19 pandemic. After his death of COVID-19, students entered to his Sina Weibo to display their condolences and sorrow. We conduct text analysis and sentiment classification to investigate the motivation behind online mourning for Dr. Li among students on Sina Weibo. Our results indicate that, a) there always more than one motivation behind online mourning exists in each time period. b) continuing connection and semi-interaction with the deceased is the main motivation when students mourn online. c) there exists positive correlation between the influence of the deceased and the motivation--sharing information with the community of fans and creating social support in a time of loss and social support. d) the motivation--honoring the dead and expressing sadness and resentment can gradually lose over time.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) occurs in ~ 40% of patients after axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), radiation therapy (RT), or chemotherapy. First-line palliative treatment utilizes compression garments and specialized massage. Reparative microsurgeries have emerged as a second-line treatment, yet both compression and surgical therapy are most effective at early stages of LE development. Identifying patients at the highest risk for BCRL would allow earlier, more effective treatment. Perometric arm volume measurements, near-infrared fluorescent lymphatic imaging (NIRF-LI) data, and blood were collected between 2016 and 2021 for 40 study subjects undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Plasma samples were evaluated using MILLIPLEX human cytokine/chemokine panels at pre-ALND and at 12 months post-RT. A Mann-Whitney t-test showed that G-CSF, GM-CSF, IFN-2α, IL-10, IL-12p40, IL-15, IL-17A, IL-1ß, IL-2, IL-3, IL-6, and MIP-1ß were significantly higher at pre-ALND in those presenting with BCRL at 12 months post-RT. MIP-1ß and IL-6 were significantly higher at pre-ALND in those who developed dermal backflow, but no BCRL, at 12 months post-RT. Plasma IL-15, IL-3, and MIP-1ß were elevated at 12 months after RT in those with clinical BCRL. These findings establish BCRL as a perpetual inflammatory disorder, and suggest the use of plasma cytokine/chemokine levels to predict those at highest risk.

ABSTRACT

This article examines how the death of Li Wenliang, in February 2020, served as an affordance for Chinese netizens to engage with their intimate sense of themselves as political subjects through the interrogative process of scalar inquiry. Li, an ophthalmologist at Wuhan Central Hospital who was sanctioned by Chinese authorities in 2019 for warning friends about the virus, was also an eminently normative and successful Han Chinese citizen who many saw as a reflection of themselves. His persecution, public humiliation, and death thus indexed the vulnerability of even the most compliant subjects and triggered an unprecedented public response that included both grief and outrage. Although largely censored within hours, this response continued to emerge throughout the year in a public mega-thread on his Weibo "Wailing Wall.” This article draws on an alternative archive of censored messages on Li's Weibo page—usually described as an affective, apolitical space—to demonstrate how the Wailing Wall also becomes a unique sociomoral space in which people collaboratively reflect upon their sense of themselves as embodied subjects. Scalar inquiry, I suggest, thus emerges as a continual, collaborative, and simultaneously personal and political process of interrogating citizenship and nationhood vis-à-vis the remembered past, the experienced present, and the anticipated future. © 2023 by the American Anthropological Association.

ABSTRACT

Background: In partnership with the Poornima University, the Jodhpur School of Public Health conducted a participatory and live webinar on "Is the world experiencing dual pandemics-COVID and Mental Health? Let's talk positive." On 15th May 2021. Dr. Naresh Nebhinani Additional Professor, Department of Psychiatry AIIMS Jodhpur was the distinguished speaker, who along with Poornima University co-founder Mr. Rahul Singhi and other panellists from Jodhpur School of Public health addressed the topic. Finding(s): The COVID-19 pandemic and the shattering economy have resulted in a detrimental impact on many people's mental health around the globe. It has created new barriers among children, health workers, and elderly along with those who already suffer from mental illness. Every third person who was infected by COVID has shown some signs of mental health issues in one form or the other and prevalence of such disorders have increased by 35% in COVID. The role of behavioural changes towards mental health issues, along with positive attitude, better coping mechanisms, positive lifestyle changes including healthy living, sobriety, healthy eating, regular physical exercise, relaxation, spiritual practice, connectedness with family and close associates, balanced use of gadgets, proper sleep etc result in better outcomes and indicators of mental health resulting due to COVID 19 impacts could be controlled. Conclusion(s): While the health-care system fights to rescue millions of lives on a daily basis, there is a significant risk of a looming pandemic of hidden mental health conditions that might devastate the present mental-health infrastructure. We need inter-disciplinary support of various sectors to execute the plan for people's participation to talk about mental health issues. With specialized psychological interventions and multi-stakeholder collaboration, we can easily curb mental health issues and have a positive outlook in life thereby establishing a balance despite external situations. ABSTRACT

This study aims to understand in depth how the people of the city of Malang live and interpret the tradition of reading Li Khomsatun's poetry as a practice of religious teachings that can ward off the COVID-19 outbreak. This study is based on a phenomenological study approach and finds that reading Li Khomsatun's poetry is a practice of prayer, intercession, and tawassul, which is the ultimate weapon in dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak. This tradition contextualizes religious teachings that can strengthen faith in the face of the COVID-19 outbreak as self-healing and living Islam. In line with that, this study suggests a method of handling outbreaks by emphasizing health protocols and medical procedures and paying attention to the importance of the culture and culture of community religious practices, which not only function to care for religious practices but also maintain local wisdom.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate how engagement in leisure time activities influences subjective well-being via perceived leisure satisfaction, as well as the moderating role of perceived severity of COVID-19 in these associations. The data for the analysis were collected using a convenience sampling method from 405 people working in various areas of Turkey via an online survey. Regression analysis, mediating effect analysis, and conditional process analysis were used to examine the hypotheses. The mediation analysis result reveals that leisure time satisfaction plays a mediating role in the relationship between leisure time activities' participation level and subjective well-being. The results of the conditional process analysis demonstrate that the perceived severity of COVID-19 has a conditional influence on the direct and indirect relations between the variables in the conceptual model of the research.

ABSTRACT

Snake soup continues to be an iconic tradition in Cantonese culture. Yet little is known about the relationship between snake soup consumption in Hong Kong, wild snake populations, and the communities depending on this tradition for their livelihoods. We applied an interdisciplinary approach including interviews with shopkeepers and genetic analyses of snake meat samples to determine the species consumed in Hong Kong, their source locations, and shopkeepers' views on the future of the industry. We genetically identified the common rat snake Ptyas mucosa, widely distributed throughout East and Southeast Asia, and the Javan spitting cobra Naja sputatrix, endemic to Indonesia, as the species most commonly consumed, which was consistent with interview responses. According to interviews, snakes had mostly been imported from mainland China in the past, but now tend to be sourced from Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. Interviews also revealed a pessimistic outlook on the continuation of this tradition because of various factors, including a lasting yet misinformed association of snakes with the 2002–2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome. Given the COVID-19 pandemic and China's ensuing ban on the consumption of terrestrial wildlife, Hong Kong's snake soup industry will probably continue to rely on Southeast Asian sources to persist. Given the cultural and conservation issues surrounding this tradition, further research on the economic, ecological and social consequences of snake consumption is needed to examine the broader implications of snake soup and similar industries in the region.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The COVID-19 crisis has generated an increasing stress throughout the population. Objective(s): To develop and validate the Adherence Scale to the Recommendations for Mental Health during the COVID-19 pandemic from the Portuguese General Directorate of Health (GDH) (ASR-MH-COVID19). Method(s): The items content was based on the GDH guides for the prevention of mental health and psychosocial well-being of the general population during the COVID-19 outbreak. After content and facial validity analysis, the preliminary version of the ASR-MHCOVID19 (8 items to be answered on a Likert scale) was completed by 413 individuals (69.2% female;mean age=31.02+/-14,272), in September-December 2020 (Sample1) and then by 967 (70.9% female;mean age=34.02+/-14,272), in February-May 2021 (Sample2). Sample1 was randomly divided in two sub-samples. Sample1A was used for exploratory factor analysis/EFA and Sample1B for confirmatory factor analysis/CFA;CFA was then replicated with Sample2. The online surveys also included the Adherence Scale to the Recommendations of Portuguese GDH to minimize the impact of COVID-19 (ASR-COVID-19;Pereira et al. 2020). Result(s): CFAs were informed by EFA and showed that the unidimensional model presented acceptable-good fit indexes (Sample1B: chi2 /df=2.747;RMSEA=.0980, p<.001;CFI=.973;TLI=.918, GFI=.972;Sample2: chi2 /df=3.327;RMSEA=.0490, p<.001;CFI=.993;TLI=.983, GFI=.990). Cronbach's alfas were alpha<.850. Pearson correlations between ASR-MH-COVID19 and ASR-COVID19 were significant (p<.01) and moderate-high for the total (r=.753) and dimensional scores (Distance and respiratory hygiene, r=.739;House and personal hygiene, r=.584;Use of remote services and isolation r=.425). Conclusion(s): The new ASR-MH-COVID19 has shown validity and reliability, allowing the investigation of this (mental) health behaviour.

ABSTRACT

Ageing process may affect intergenerational relations in different ways, including income distribution. Simultaneously, the global economy has undergone various crises. An important question is whether these crises impact the nexus between ageing and intergenerational income distribution. Finding an answer to this question is difficult in the literature;although the crisis-income inequality nexus is quite often investigated, this is not in the intergenerational context. This paper attempts to solve such puzzles using data covering 13 OECD countries in the period 1995-2018. The findings show that the relationship between the age structure of the population and intergenerational income distribution before and after the Great Recession of 2007-2009 was quite different. Actually, the Great Recession seems to have triggered this nexus in such a way that the elderly won the intergenerational income game in the aftermath of the crisis;however, the working-age and younger cohorts took a rematch later. The results obtained may support the political decision-making how to cope with economic crises, including the present COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the economy and society, so as to treat different generations fair.

ABSTRACT

Despite the high theoretical capacity and energy density of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, the development of Li-S batteries has been slow due to the poor electrical conductivity and the shuttle effect of the electrode materials, resulting in low sulfur utilization and fast long-term cycling capacity decay. The modified carbon materials are often used as sulfur hosts to significantly improve the cycling performance of the materials, but also bring high-cost issues. Here, the porous carbon materials are synthesized quickly and conveniently by the microwave cross-linking method using discarded medical masks as carbon sources and concentrated sulfuric acid as solvent. However, poor surface and structural properties limit the application of materials. The porous carbon material is modified with p-toluene disulfide and urea as the sulfur and nitrogen sources by the microwave cross-linking method, which not only improves the porosity and specific surface area of the porous carbon material, but also improved the electrical conductivity and interlayer spacing of the material. As synthesized SN-doped porous carbon is employed as the sulfur host, which exhibits a high discharge capacity (1349.3 mAh g-1) at 0.1°C, the S-porous C/S, N-porous C/S, and SN-porous C/S can maintain 78.1, 43.9, and 59.5% of the initial capacity after 500 cycles. The results indicate that the doping of S and N atoms provides sufficient active sites for the chemisorbed lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) to improve the reaction kinetics of the materials.

ABSTRACT

Olfactory dysfunction in the post COVID-19 condition reported worldwide are refractory for some patients. For this reason, appropriate treatment is desired. In this article, we describe two cases of olfactory dysfunction in the post COVID-19 condition that was improved by traditional acupuncture treatment. By using the Yingxiang point (LI20), which is said to improve the sense of smell since ancient times, acupuncture treatment was performed 1-2 times a week in two patients about 6 and 7 months after the diagnosis of COVID-19. Acupuncture needles with a body length of 30 mm and a body diameter of 0.16 mm were inserted about 10 mm deep into the skin. We stimulated LI20 of the right and left sides until the patients felt the de qi sensation (acupuncture resonance), and left needles in the points for about 15 min. Immediately after the acupuncture treatment, the symptoms of olfactory dysfunction were alleviated, and the improvement in olfactory dysfunction lasted for 2-4 days. As the number of acupuncture treatments increased, the time until the flareup of olfactory dysfunction was prolonged, and the symptoms tended to decrease. In our experience, the acupuncture treatment was effective in a short period for treating residual olfactory dysfunction of the post COVID-19 condition, suggesting that acupuncture may serve as an adjunct to modern medical treatment, and it may also be a new option for patients who are resistant to Western medical treatment or unable to continue treatment because of side effects. In conclusion, acupuncture may be a new option for patients who are resistant to modern medical treatment or who are unable to continue treatment because of side effects.

ABSTRACT

As the economy started to recover from the COVID pandemic, the price of Li2CO3 skyrocketed to its highest. This situation has aggravated concerns about the supply chain for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Recycling spent LIBs is a potential solution to alleviate the bottleneck of the supply chain and prevent environmental pollution, and has attracted lots of attention. However, lithium recycling is generally disregarded because of the complex recycling process and its low recycling efficiency. Here, in this work we developed a sustainable lithium recovery process, which can selectively leach and recover lithium with formic acid before recycling valuable metals. With the reported method, lithium can be 99.8% recovered from layered oxide cathode materials with 99.994% purity. In addition, this lithium recovery process is affordable, compared to the typical hydrometallurgical process, by saving 11.15% per kilogram of spent LIBs. Therefore, this research provided a new solution to eliminating the effects of lithium ions on valuable metal separation and the co-precipitation reaction and precluding the influence of other metal ions on lithium recovery. This simplified lithium recovery process provides new opportunities for sustainable recycling of LIBs and economical restoration of the lithium supply chain.

ABSTRACT

Law enforcement officers beat citizens who were not wearing face masks and shamed them by parading them in public. There were also louder forms of public resistance, in some cases literally, as some citizens shouted out their frustrations at the government staff, while others noisily banged their pots and pans to attract public attention and protest the strict coronavirus rules (p. 56). [...]we are not clearly provided the social class backgrounds and other demographic characteristics of the diarists, nor do we get information about how much the book describes can represent a wider population.

ABSTRACT

Li–air batteries have received significant attention for their ultrahigh theoretical energy density. However, the byproducts induced by attacking air hinder the conversion of Li–O2 batteries to Li–air batteries. Humidity is one of the main obstacles, not only causing side reactions with the discharge products but also leading to rapid corrosion of the lithium anode. Here, we fabricated a novel composite hydrophobic catalyst by loading RuO2 and graphene on N-doped porous carbon. The catalyst was endowed with hydrophobicity and showed superior catalytic performance and low affinity to water in the air. A Li–air battery equipped with this novel composite catalyst exhibited eminent cycling performance in pure oxygen (over 470 h), humid oxygen [∼40% relative humidity (RH), over 310 h], and ambient air (∼42% RH, over 330 h) at a current density of 500 mA g−1, and the discharge specific capacity increased from 13122.1 to 19358.6 mAh g−1. © 2022

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs (miRNAs) and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), are pivotal regulators involved in the pathogenic mechanism of multiple coronaviruses. Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) has evolved multiple strategies to escape the innate immune response of host cells, but whether ncRNAs are involved in this process during PDCoV infection is still unknown. RESULTS: In this study, the expression profiles of miRNAs, lncRNAs and mRNAs in IPEC-J2 cells infected with PDCoV at 0, 12 and 24 hours postinfection (hpi) were identified through small RNA and RNA sequencing. The differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs), lncRNAs (DElncRNAs) and mRNAs (DEmRNAs) were screened from the comparison group of IPEC-J2 cells at 0 and 12 hpi as well as the comparison group of IPEC-J2 cells at 12 and 24 hpi. The target genes of these DEncRNAs were predicted. The bioinformatics analysis of the target genes revealed multiple significantly enriched functions and pathways. Among them, the genes that were associated with innate immunity were specifically screened. The expression of innate immunity-related ncRNAs and mRNAs was validated by RT-qPCR. Competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory networks among innate immunity-related ncRNAs and their target mRNAs were established. Moreover, we found that the replication of PDCoV was significantly inhibited by two innate immunity-related miRNAs, ssc-miR-30c-3p and ssc-miR-374b-3p, in IPEC-J2 cells. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a data platform to conduct studies of the pathogenic mechanism of PDCoV from a new perspective and will be helpful for further elucidation of the functional role of ncRNAs involved in PDCoV escaping the innate immune response.

ABSTRACT

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased psychological distress on a global scale, particularly for vulnerable people, including new and expecting mothers. We are still determining the magnitude of the toll on parents and their children. Methods: 516 pregnant people completed online questionnaires during the spring of 2020 (T1);296 of these people completed additional questionnaires approximately one year postpartum (T2). Participants reported on mental health, coping behaviors, and infant temperament. A principal components analysis (PCA) was conducted to identify coping factors. Linear regression analyses were conducted to evaluate associations among coping factors, maternal depressive symptoms, and infant temperament. Results: PCA revealed three factors explaining 40.53% of the variance in coping behaviors. The first factor included self-care behaviors (e.g., exercise, mediation);the second, numbing behaviors (e.g., increased screen time, eating comfort foods);and the third, reaching out for help behaviors (e.g., talking to a therapist or other parents). Engaging in reaching out for help coping behaviors was associated with a decrease in depressive symptoms from T1 to T2 (adjusted R2=.03, p=.02). This was most pronounced in participants who reported greater emotion regulation difficulties (R2=.07, p=.04). Further, increases in depressive symptoms from T1 to T2 were associated with higher levels of infant negative affect (R2=.08, p=.004). Conclusions: These findings underscore the importance of providing socially focused coping and mental health services for pregnant people to ensure the well-being of new mothers and their children. Future work should evaluate trajectories of emotional development of children who were in utero during the pandemic.
